Remember Cheech and Chong? They had a comedy album back in the day called Big Bamboo. I think that was also a brand name of rolling papers too... which if you know about Cheech and Chong, then chances are, you know about Big Bamboo papers. I know nothing about the latter but... I digress.

Local Greenhouse

I enjoyed these beautiful orchids at Gardener's Supply this last weekend. What an oasis their greenhouses are at this time of year. I found spending some time in the company of these exotic blooms, in a sunny greenhouse with bubbling fountains everywhere, to be very rejuvenating. The moistness of the air, the warmth, and the heady fragrance inspired me for the rest of the day. A long winter needs these types of interruptions.

Marmolada

Have a look at these gerbera. The variety is called "Marmolada". Our Canadian friends at Rosaflora grow this beautiful flower. Rumor has it that Marmolada is really just a plain white gerbera but the night before it is harvested, the elves at Rosaflora stick candy canes in the soil around the gerbera and the next morning you have Marmolada! The world's first peppermint gerbera. Santa would approve.

Rose Hips

Hip is an adjective that is often associated with Green Mountain Florist Supply. We are, after all, on the cutting edge of the floral industry. Floral Hipsters are we... Yoda-esque but you get my drift.

Hip is also present in the noun form these days in our coolers. Check out these beautiful Rose Hips. These ornamental seed pods of the rose plant are a unique branch that dry beautifully. Work them into your fresh arrangements and then air dry them for a lovely addition to a dried wreath.

Rose Hips also have culinary and medicinal uses as well. I have spread rose hip jelly on my toast though luckily for me, I haven't needed them in a medicinal way. If I suffered from osteoarthritis, I might pop a supplement derived from these pods. High in vitamin c, are they. There's that Yoda thing again. Wonder if Darth Vader would have been less bitter about the galaxy if he had spread some rose hip jelly on his toast?

Cabbage Patch

You can't eat these cabbages. Nope. No Way. I tried to make some coleslaw with them and let me tell you it was nasty.
What they are good for is making beautiful fall arrangements. They are so captivating as an ornamental. We have them in two colors. This white/green with a touch of blush in the center is gorgeous. We also have a purple and green that is equally striking. Happy Thanksgiving.

Chinese Lanterns

These papery orange balloons are a favorite harbinger of fall. Though we see them often here in New England they are even more popular in Japan where they are part of the traditional Buddhist Bon festival. They are used in this celebration to honor the spirits of one's ancestors. It is believed that the orange lanterns illuminate a pathway between the mortal world and the place where our ancestors rest.

We sell these in their fresh form but they dry beautifully and make a very nice permanent/dried flower.

Our friends from Rosaflora sent us some beautiful sweetheart roses for our open house. These delicate pink roses were a particular standout. The variety is Valerie. As you can see they unfurled completely looking very much like the rambling beach roses that climb up the cottages of Sconcet Nantucket. Short stem sweethearts can be so charming.

If you have never played around with DecoBeads, you ought to give them a whirl. They are these little dried beads that swell to many times their original size when you soak them in water or Vodka. You use them in clear containers for an interesting, though slightly freaky effect. If you can get by the hand feel of them which is like slimy eyeballs, they can be really fun!

Dyed Flowers Rant

Excuse me while I step onto my soap box for a moment...

I have been noticing a disturbing trend coming out of many flower farms. Apparently, there is a growing market for dyed, enhanced, and/or glittered fresh flower material. I am seeing more and more of this sort of thing. I, for one, do not get it.

These "enhanced floral products" are in my opinion a bastardization of an already perfect thing. Does anyone really think it is an improvement to take a lovely dendrobium orchid and dip into some chemical dye to give it a new look? Do we really need electric orange, green and blue chrysanthemums? Sparkle glitter on roses??? Really? Hasn't nature provided enough of a range of natural colors and textures? Is subtlety dead? This Blogger/flower lover doesn't want anything to do with the "enhanced" trend.

I'll never dye my hair, have Botox injections, or eat margarine either. I trust Mother Nature more than I trust chemists. I know I sound like Andy Rooney here and I apologize for that but there is something really wrong with this trend.

I'll also mention that these chemical dyes do nothing for the longevity of fresh cut flowers. THAT is the last thing we need!

Getting off my soap box now. Back to your regularly schedule, positive BLOGGING. Rant off.

Parrot Tulips

Ruffled edge tulips are often referred to as parrot tulips. They are stunning with their serrated petals. Also seen here are some double tulips that are doing their best peonies impression. The noble tulip remains one of my favorite flowers in all seasons. Our Canadian neighbors are producing some of the highest quality tulips available. We showcased many new varieties at our open house. It's always Spring at GMFSI!

We get some strange stuff around here. I am not referring to the staff of GMFSI although you can make an argument that they are the strangest things in the building. No, I am talking about some of the tropical flowers that come in from environments that are very different than our own. Look at these Uhule fern. Freaky! Also called Monkey Tails, these cousins of the local fiddle head fern are very interesting creatures. Presumably, in time they unfurl into some majestic tropical frond. Don't know, never seen one bloom out. Put some strange into your cooler and order up some Uhule today.

Red Sox Nation

These are sad days for Red Sox fans like me. The epic September collapse, Franconia resigning and now Theo defecting to the Cubs! Damn! I cried a little yesterday. Still, I am no fair weather fan. Hunting Season

I was sitting in my tree stand the other day, when along came this herd of deer. Trouble was, they were all made of straw. Not very good eating, I thought, relaxing the tension on my bow. Besides, these are Reindeer. If there is one sure way to get on Santa's naughty list, it would be showing up at a weight station with a Reindeer.
So, I enjoyed them with my eyes. Particularly, curious was their Minny Pearl like price tags hanging from their antlers. Weird.

What does this have to do with these beautiful Asiatic lilies? I'm not really sure but they reminded me of a tiger and the only other tiger reference I could think of was Tony the Tiger of Frosted Flakes fame. That would have been wierd to try and tie these extraordinarily beautiful flowers to breakfast cereal don't you think?
Anyway, our local Asiatic lilies are remarkable right now. Incredible quality and unusual varieties... THEY'RE GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRREAT!

Lunar Moth

Flowers are amongst nature's most beautiful creations but the blooms are not alone in the pageant. Witness this ghostly visitor from the night.

This Lunar Moth proudly perched itself on our building in broad daylight. Defiantly and without concern for the commotion of our parking lot, the moth displayed it's spectacular pistachio hue for all to see. The flowers bowed down in reverence.

After dazzling us the nocturnal messenger fluttered off, elegantly navigating the winds of South Burlington on route back to the night.

Calla Spectacula

I am constantly amazed at the incredible variety of colors mini callas are available in. These are a far cry from the gargantuan white callas from yesteryear. This variety morphs from a stunning majenta into a blaze orange... all in one flower face. We get callas from all over the world. Some come from California but these are from South America. This variety is commonly referred to as Orange Mango. So forget putting the lime in the coconut... put some orange mango in your arrangements.

Good Reception

Lately, Julie has been having trouble. She has been getting fuzzy reception on all her favorite TV shows. Today we came to her rescue.

This is Sybil fitting Julie with a new antenna so she can watch Modern Family and So you Think you Can Dance without all the static. Once we bent the wire just so, she could even pull in signals from a guy with an old CB radio down the street!

There has been a change in the candle universe. The movement is toward pre-poured votives. These are the most convenient and cost effective votives on the market. I particularly related to those orphaned toys... the Fred in the Box, the train with square wheels, and my favorite- the water pistol that shoots jelly! Well, GMFSI has our own Island of Misfit Floral Supplies. We call it the Re-Invention Center or as Peter likes to call it- The Rehab Center. He knows all about rehab!

Garden Pottery

For those of you who work with flowering plants, we have received our 2010 spring pottery. These beautiful, country planters work equally well for high end flower arrangements. The interiors are glazed so they are water tight but no drainage means you need to keep plants in utility pots so that water overflow can be managed.

Imagine this lovely blue and white pot with a lush blue hydrangea plant or a pot of Tete a Tete daffodiles. Add some moss and a few branches and BINGO... you are a star designer. So simple, so beautiful.

So... it's been awhile since my last blog post. If you have been wondering where I have been... well... it's kind of a crazy story.

What you may not know about me is that in my spare time I am an astronaut. On a recent journey to outer space, I was abducted by aliens and held for ransom. Nobody would pay the ransom so I sat, confined, until I was able to escape using my shrewd intellect and superior strength.

I am back now and hope to be blogging more regularly.

That is my story and I am sticking to it.

Wreaths, Garlands and Swags

Did you know that Green Mountain carries some of the coolest western greens wreath available? Now I realize this is Vermont. Balsam is King! I love balsam wreaths myself but you ought to check out some of the amazing western greens wreaths that we carry.

We have boxwood, juniper, manzanita, cedar, and mixed varieties. Some are round... some are square. Be sure to check with your salesperson for availability. These are going fast.

The pineapple is symbol for welcome. In Williamsburg, you will often find a fresh pineapple nestled amongst other fruits above the doorways of homes during the holidays.

When Pigs Fly

Swine Flu be damned! We like pork! We really like flying pork! Bacon Rules!

Brett made me write all that. If you didn't know, he is "bacon obsessed". That is a real clinical diagnosis and Bizzle(Brett's nickname), has a chronic case of the disease. He puts bacon on everything. He smells like bacon! Sometimes we wonder if he keeps a strip or two in his pocket just to be close to the stuff.

Naturally, this flying pig is Bizzle's favorite ornament this season. If you could only see how he gazes on it longingly. So, if Biz is on your shopping list this season, make it easy on yourself. Get him a pound or two of pork belly and make his holiday dreams come true.

Hoo Cooks for You?

Have you ever been lying awake late at night on a warm summer evening, with the windows open... suddenly the silence is broken by a call that sounds like, "who cook's for you?". If you have, you probably have owls in your woods. I love their nocturnal song.

Owls are the inspiration for this woodland tree. It is also full of pheasant feathers and birch bark. Trees like these are very evocative of Vermont and the Adirondacks. The color palette is muted with hints of red flannel buffalo plaid and winter berry. Give this look a try in your shop. It is always one of our most popular motifs.

All That Glitters, is not Gold

There was a time when I used to say, "if it don't shine, it ain't mine". I usually used this expression around the subject of Christmas Tree decoration. I have since learned to love a more subtle, natural look but there are times when glitter makes me very happy.

This tree is case in point. It is a collision of coppers, golds and oranges that would make Midas blush. One half Williamsburg... one half Vegas... this tree can be seen from the International Space Station. It positively glows!

We have been receiving many inquiries about the trends/looks for the 2009 holiday season. We will be featuring several styles in the coming weeks to get you thinking about your holiday season.

One of the lines we will be featuring this year is a 'Homespun" traditional look. We feel that the whole trend towards nesting we manifest itself in the trends for the holiday. Comfortable, warm looks that make you feel all warm and fuzzy should be strong sellers this season. In fact, I wore my flannel pajamas while designing this vignette.

I am not quite sure I understand this whole "ornamental" thing. I have tried to steam these beauties up for lunch several times now and I keep getting scolded by the flower department! Apparently these are for decoration not for lunch. Go figure. Hey... you do what you want with them... I'll do what I want with them.

Some strange things happened here over the long Labor Day weekend. We arrived this morning to a building full of ghouls and goblins. Someone call Ghostbusters! We're haunted!

I like them myself. The Spooks are making things exciting around here... especially that Headless Horseman dude. Freaky! If you are needing some endoplasmic friends for your store, give us a call. We got the goods to scare the pants off your customers. Happy Halloween!

Woodstock... 40 Years Later

It is no secret that we are all a bunch of aging hippies here at Green Mountain. The fact that none of us here can remember the 60's is proof that we were there.

Anyway, in honor of the 40th anniversary of Woodstock, we have brought in these tye-dyed roses. We are not really sure how our grower achieved this effect. Each petal is a different color! They are not painted but they have been in some kind of absorption dye. They are really groovy. You can almost hear Hendrix if you listen closely...

...purple haze all in my brain... lately things don't seem the same... acting funny and I don't know why... 'scuze me while I kiss the sky.
